v0.2 Beta (07-12-2006) No No. Not only it has outdated features and difficult to chart accurately but its .sng chart format (only directly supported in Freetar and the PSP homebrew title Gunnar Hero) can no longer be converted to .mid for other games when Frets on Fire Tools on Nukular shut down.[1] Java SE, Microsoft Windows Anton Struyk May 19, 2006 Note chart editor for Freetar (also compatible with the PlayStation Portable homebrew title Gunnar Hero) and an alternate note chart editor for Frets on Fire (Freetar Editor's .sng charts needed to be converted to .mid first[2]). Made in Java, this early note chart editor was more advanced than Frets on Fire's built-in note chart editor that was released after.

Compared to FoF's basic built-in Song Editor, Freetar Editor v0.2 includes everything FoF's Song Editor has plus:

  • Import .mid, .midi, .mp3, .wav, .wma (v0.2 beta), and .flac audio files in addition to .ogg.
  • Tempo by "Beats Per Second" (initial tempo; new tempo cannot be added).
  • Allow error time (accuracy for understrumming notes) when playing in Freetar.
  • Toggles for Forced HOPOs. (v0.2 beta)

Charts are saved in .sng format and used to be able to be converted to .mid in FoFTools to play in Frets on Fire and other inspired games but the website shut down.

Frets on Fire Song Editor - Bang Bang, Mystery Man Frets on Fire's Song Editor Official website v1.3.110 (11-05-2008) No No. The game's chart editor is too basic and outdated to be used for modern games. The inability to change tempo during songs makes it too difficulty to chart accurately. Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X, Linux Unreal Voodoo August 3, 2006 Frets on Fire was an early Guitar Hero-inspired video game for computers that came with a basic chart editing software built into the game with no advanced editing features.
  • Import .ogg audio files.
  • Guitar track only.
  • Scroll highway.
  • Playback.
  • Chart for Supaeasy (Easy in GH), Easy (Medium in GH), Medium (Hard in GH), and Amazing (Expert in GH) difficulties.
  • Tempo by "Beats Per Minute" (initial tempo; new tempo cannot be added)
  • Song information stored as "song.ini".
  • Save charts as ".mid" along with song information saved as "song.ini"
    • This song format became the default format in later note chart editors and later Guitar Hero/Rock Band-inspired games.
Creating a Rock Band Network chart with REAPER v3.102[3]Rock Band chart editing with REAPER v3.102 REAPER Official website v7.19 (07-23-2024) Yes Yes for professional editors and Rock Band Network chart editing. This program can be difficult for first timers to learn as it wasn't primarily developed as a chart editor but it can be used as one. See this article for details. Microsoft Windows, macOS (10.5 or newer), Linux Cockos, Inc August 23, 2006 REAPER is a proprietary digital audio workstation (DAW) and MIDI sequencer software primarily used for composing, mixing, and editing music. It has a built-in MIDI editor that can be used for creating note charts but it can be very complex and complicated to learn and use it that way. It was used by Harmonix to create note charts for Rock Band songs.

It is also possible to use other DAWs that have a MIDI sequencer to make custom songs but REAPER is free to use.

A license is not required to be purchased as the unlicensed version has access to every feature even past the expired evaluated time period but purchasing a license is courteously recommended to support the developers. A license lasts until the end of the next major version release upon purchase, which would usually take several years.

FeedBack Chart Editor - TTFAF GH3 chart FeedBack Chart Editor

GitHub (archived releases)
v0.9.7b (06-28-2008)[1] No It may have outdated features but it's still good for classic Guitar Hero games up to Guitar Hero: Aerosmith, Frets on Fire, and FoFiX. The .chart file format would need to be converted to .mid in Mid2Chart or in a newer chart editor to be used in inspired games pre-Clone Hero. Microsoft Windows, PlayStation Portable TurkeyMan February 28, 2007 FeedBack Chart Editor (simply "FeedBack") is a simple, yet an advanced chart editor for its time with many quality-of-life improvements, and was the most popular chart editor in the 2000s. While it does not support advanced note features like a toggle for Force HOPOs and sliders within the editor and more, they can be manually text-edited in the .chart file.

Notable features included since FoF's built-in chart editor are:

  • Additional instruments: Co-op Lead Guitar ("Coop-Lead"), Bass/Rhythm ("Coop-Bass/Rhythm"), Enhanced Guitar, Enhanced Coop-Lead, Enhanced Coop-Bass/Rhythm, 10-Key Guitar, Drums, Double Drums, Vocals (5 lanes), Keyboard. Several of these extra instruments have not been useful.
    • Show Reference Track: A second instrumental chart can be viewed on the side.
  • Load multiple audio tracks to each main instrument with volumes adjustable to each one.
  • Change tempo during song by "Beats Per Minute" (BPM).
  • Add time signatures.
  • Add section names.
  • Add Star Power phrases.
  • Add Face-Off phrases.
  • Travel and place notes by triplets and other distances.
  • Place events and track events including solo markers (for Rock Band games and later GH/RB-inspired games) and stage effects.
  • Metronome and note claps.
  • More song.ini properties.

v1.8 RC12 + latest hotfix (09-26-2020) No Yes, especially for making Real/Pro Guitar and Real/Pro Bass tabs for Phase Shift, YARG and Rocksmith, Dance charts for Phase Shift, and Vocals for FoFiX, Performous, and YARG. Can also be used for Frets on Fire (this tool was originally created for FoFiX), Clone Hero, Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock (modded PC version), Guitar Hero World Tour: Definitive Edition, and Fret Smasher. Microsoft Windows raynebc February 26, 2014 Originally developed for FoFiX (a fan-made enhanced version of Frets on Fire), Editor on Fire (EoF) is a highly-advanced chart editor that includes many feature from the Guitar Hero and Rock Band series, and includes support of charting Rocksmith song. This is currently one of the two most recommended chart editors to use in the current age along with Moonscraper Chart Editor that was released later.

Notable features included since FeedBack Chart Editor v0.97b are:

  • Import and convert .mp3 and .wav audio files to OGG format.
  • Import .mid charts, FeebBack .charts, GH packed songs (including GHL), Guitar Pro tabs (.gp3, .gp4, .gp5, .gpx, .gp, Go PlayAlong .xml files) for Rocksmith tracks, Rocksmith .xml charts, Bandfuse .rif charts for Rocksmith, GHL packed songs
  • Rock Band 3 pro guitar and Rocksmith charting ("tabbing") support
  • More playable instruments (does not include the unnecessary "enhanced" instruments): Rhythm (separated from Bass), Vocals (as actual vocals, playable in FoFiX and GHWT, lyrics displayable in newer inspired games), Real Drums (extra Drums features from a MIDI drumkit for Phase Shift and Clone Hero), Real Bass (17-fret and 22-fret versions for Rock Band 3, Rocksmith, Phase Shift and YARG), Real Guitar (17-fret and 22-fret versions for Rock Band 3, Rocksmith, Phase Shift and YARG), Real Guitar Bonus (additional guitar for Rocksmith and YARG), Dance (DDR-styled instrument for Phase Shift).
    • Toggle drumkit styles: 4-Lane (+ RB3 Pro Cymbals), 5-Lane (GHWT-styled)
    • GHL Mode: Convert Guitar and Bass to GHL Guitar and GHL Bass for up to 7-lane charting (3 black lanes, 3 white lanes, and open notes if enabled).
  • Toggles for Forced HOPOs, sliders, open notes, drum note velocity (accents/ghost notes), solo markers, and more.
  • Extended sustains. Reversed extended sustains (first introduced in Guitar Hero Live) are playable in Clone Hero.
  • Optional settings: Sustain gaps to prevent sustained notes from touching another note.
  • Snap unaligned notes to grid. Recommended to do this a lot when copy/pasting notes as pasting copied notes may not be pasted correctly.
  • Find optimal and evaluate Star Power pathing for Clone Hero.
  • More song.ini properties for newer Guitar Hero/Rock Band-inspired games like Phase Shift, Clone Hero, Fret Smasher.
  • Cloning charts from another instrument or difficulty which helps save time charting multiple instruments/difficulties.

However, while EoF can import FeedBack's .chart files, EoF chart files are only saved as .eof and .mid and cannot be converted to FeedBack's .chart in EoF. This would have to be done with the Mid2Chart conversion software. Also, only one audio file can be loaded at a time.

Moonscraper Moonscraper Chart Editor

v1.5.7 (08-13-2024) Yes Yes, especially to chart 5-Lane instrumental tracks and GHL-styled instrumental tracks in Clone Hero separately, saving charts in .chart format (.chart format directly compatible with Clone Hero and Fret Smasher) with the option to export to .mid (for them and other games, which is good for multiple direct compatibility), and looking forward to new features. Can also be used for Phase Shift, Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock (modded PC version), Guitar Hero World Tour: Definitive Edition, and YARG, and was used to create battle scenes in Everhood.[2] Microsoft Windows, Linux FireFox May 19, 2019 (v1.3.1.1) Moonscraper is a chart editor built on the Unity engine, using an interface similar to FeedBack Chart Editor but with many more advanced features, a competitor to EoF. Moonscraper and EoF are commonly used for editing note charts in the current era of song charting but there are features exclusive to both features.

While Moonscraper contains many features that EoF can do, Moonscraper (as of v1.5.0.2) currently does not have support for EoF features like:

  • Rock Band 3 Pro Guitar & Rocksmith tabbing/charting.
  • Dance instrument.
  • Limited Vocals. There is a lyrics editor in Moonscraper but pitches cannot be adjusted; playing Vocals in FoFiX or GHWT would require EoF.

But what Moonscraper does currently have that EoF does not have are:

  • Charting in FeedBack .chart format (and can import .mid and convert to .chart) and can export the chart in .mid format.
  • Allowing 5-Lane and 6-Lane (GHL-styled) charts to co-exist as different instruments whereas in EoF, they are only toggleable, choosing one or the other for that playable track.
    • GHL Co-op and GHL Rhythm tracks were added in v1.5.0, exclusive in Moonscraper and playable in Clone Hero but are also planned for YARG.
  • Load multiple audio tracks to each instrument like in FeedBack and adjust their volumes, whereas EoF was able to only load one audio track at a time.
  • More features to be added in future updates.
