A Rhythm Guitar is, as the name implies, an instrument designed to maintain a rhythm. Some songs in the Guitar Hero series feature such an instrument. In Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock, for example, a rhythm guitar is used in lieu of a bass guitar for Cooperative play in certain songs. However, if a song already has a bass guitar, a rhythm guitar is used in conjunction with the lead and bass guitar to add filler sound. There are three ways to determine whether or not a song has a rhythm guitar. The first method is to listen to the music and isolate the guitar and bass, primarily during the guitar solo; if a third guitar can be heard in the audio mix, then there is a rhythm guitar in the song. Alternatively, the easier method is to examine the note tracks on the guitar and bass during co-op or band play; if a guitar is heard, but no corresponding notes appear on the guitar or bass highways, then there is a rhythm guitar. The third method only works with Master Tracks; know if the real-life or virtual band has a rhythm guitarist.

The following songs have a rhythm guitar, whether it has a rhythm guitar in the audio mix, or features a rhythm guitar instead of a bass guitar in cooperative mode.

NOTE: All Metallica songs feature a rhythm guitar, as James Hetfield plays a rhythm guitar in real-life.
