A Rhythm Guitar is, as the name implies, an instrument designed to maintain a rhythm.
In Cooperative Play or Practice mode, some songs in Guitar Hero II, Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock, Guitar Hero: Aerosmith, and the On Tour series features a playable Rhythm Guitar track and may feature a separate playable Lead Guitar track (and a different audio tracks) instead of a normal playable Guitar track (mixed with lead and rhythm). Songs with a playable Rhythm Guitar track lacks a playable Bass track.
Some songs with multiple lead guitars in the audio that features a playable Lead Guitar track and a playable Rhythm Guitar track will use the Rhythm Guitar track as a second lead guitar such as the dual guitar solos of "Free Bird" in Guitar Hero II and DragonForce songs in Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock.
