"Chelsea Dagger" is a song by The Fratellis and their second single. It was released on 28 August 2006. It is taken from their debut album Costello Music, which was released in the UK on 11 September 2006. It is supposed to be named after Jon Frateli's wife Heather, a burlesque dancer whose stage name he borrowed for the song.
The song became their first significant chart hit in the UK, peaking at number five in the UK Singles Chart, therefore marking their first UK Top 5 hit as well as their highest charting single to date. This surprised the band, who weren't going to release the song as they thought it might be too risqué to do well. It lasted 29 weeks in the UK Top 100. It eventually reached number two in the Netherlands.
This song was Number 77 on Rolling Stone's list of the 100 Best Songs of 2007.[1] It was voted Number 59 on Australian Radio Triple J's National Hottest 100 2007 countdown on 26 January 2008.
The song also appears in the trailer for the movies Run, Fat Boy, Run, Shrek The Third, Hot Fuzz, Knocked Up, and The Game Plan, as well as the television commercials for Balls of Fury, Open Season, Youth in Revolt and Amstel Brewery. It is also used for the supermarket chain Vons. It is the theme song of the 2006 Serious Request project on 3FM (The Netherlands). In the night of Saturday 23 December to Sunday 24 December 2006 the song was massively requested and played six times within a four hour time span.
Characterised by its anthemic, scat chorus, it has been adopted on many football terraces as a crowd "favourite" (see below).
It was produced by Tony Hoffer, the highly-acclaimed American record producer famous for his work with the likes of Beck, The Kooks and Supergrass.
