Custom song is a fan term used to describe songs created by the community for Guitar Hero and/or related games as third-party songs. "Custom songs" has been used and has been around as early as 2006 especially with Freetar and Frets on Fire being the first two Guitar Hero-inspired game with support for custom songs and had song editors for editing note charts of new songs. This concept was soon integrated with the fourth main title release of the Guitar Hero series, Guitar Hero World Tour and onward through the Music Studio ("GHStudio" in Guitar Hero 5 and newer games) that can then be uploaded to the GHTunes music service (known as "GHTracks" in Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock).
Besides creating GHTunes/GHTracks songs and note charts through Music Studio/GHStudio on console, there are ways to add custom songs on other Guitar Hero and related games.
Note chart-editing tools[]
- Main article: Editing tools
Official editors[]
- Music Studio: Available in Guitar Hero World Tour, Guitar Hero: Metallica, Guitar Hero: Smash Hits, and Guitar Hero: Van Halen
- Recording studio: Live-record songs alone or with a band.
- GHMix: A song editor to manually edit notes. Bug fixes and some additional features are included in Guitar Hero: Metallica, Guitar Hero: Smash Hits, and Guitar Hero: Van Halen.
- GHStudio: An updated Music Studio available in Guitar Hero 5, Band Hero for home consoles, and Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock.
- GHJam: An updated Recording Studio. Nothing too much has changed but has a new design.
- GHMix 2.0: An updated GHMix with many new features like custom Star Power phrases and extended sustains but there are still some unsupported features such as tap notes and custom HOPO placements.
Third-party editors[]
There are different unofficial third-party software used to chart songs for Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock or Guitar Hero World Tour, specifically on PC. Commonly-used chart editing software include but are not limited to:
- FeedBack Chart Editor created by TurkeyMan: Discontinued and archived on GitHub. (GitHub)
- Editor on Fire (EoF) created by raynebc: Development may be on hiatus or discontinued. Last updated September 26, 2020.
- Moonscraper created by FireFox: Actively in development.
- REAPER published by Cockos: Actively in development. This is primarily a music editor for creating and editing music but it also has a MIDI editor that can be used for charting songs. This software was used by Harmonix to create song charts for the Rock Band video game series.
Then to import charted songs to Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock on PC, the player needs to install Guitar Hero Three Control Panel (GHTCP+ recommended to gain access to GH3+ features for song charts that use them) and link it to the Guitar Hero III folder.
In Guitar Hero World Tour: Definitive Edition, custom songs can be placed in the guitar-hero-sdk/Assets/Songs
folder. Song charts developed in EoF or Moonscraper (exported in .mid format) can load up right away. FeedBack Chart Editor's .chart format needs to be converted into .mid format (easiest to do that is importing .chart files into EoF or Moonscraper and exporting to .mid).
