Gibson Guitar Corporation is a manufacturer of electric and acoustic guitars and, along with its subsidiary companies Epiphone and Kramer, the primary guitar sponsor of the Guitar Hero series. All four controllers packaged with the various games in the series — the Guitar Hero SG Controller with the PlayStation 2 version of each game, the Guitar Hero X-Plorer Controller with the Xbox 360 version of Guitar Hero II, the Guitar Hero Wireless Les Paul Controller with the Wii, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3 version of Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock and Guitar Hero Aerosmith, and the Guitar Hero Wireless Kramer Striker Controller with the PS2 version of Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock — are based on Gibson or Kramer guitars. In addition, a plethora of in-game guitars based on Gibson, Kramer and Epiphone products can be bought in-game and played by the player's in-game avatar.

However, due to a lawsuit against Activision in 2008 that Gibson lost against over a patent violation a year after,[1] Activision and RedOctane no longer produces Gibson-based guitar controllers. This led to Activision and RedOctane creating a new guitar controller for their upcoming Guitar Hero World Tour dubbed the "genericaster".
