Guitar Hero: On Tour received unofficial achievements support for the RetroAchievements achievement service on February 22, 2021 and was the first Guitar Hero game to receive RetroAchievements support.[1]

These achievements can be unlocked when playing in any of the following frontends/emulators while being logged in RetroAchievements on those frontend(s)/emulator(s). While others exist, these particular frontends/emulators are verified as hardcore-compliant, allowing them to be used in hardcode mode with leaderboard support:

  • RetroArch: A multi-system emulation frontend for many hardware. DeSmuME, melonDS, and melonDS DS libretro cores are supported. melonDS DS is recommended for proper screen rotation in RetroArch when playing these rotated games.
  • BitHawk: A multi-system emulation frontend for Microsoft Windows. melonDS libretro core is supported. This frontend is recommended when obtaining achievements for Guitar Hero: On Tour with the Control Hack (see the Setting up a guitar controller section on how to set controls).
  • RALibRetro: A portable variation of RetroArch for Microsoft Windows primarily used to create achievements. DeSmuME and melonDS libretro cores are supported.
  • melonDS-Android: An unofficial Android port of the melonDS emulator with a Google Play Store release since Beta v1.9.0 on November 2, 2023, RetroAchievements was implemented in the nightly builds since February 28, 2023[2] and became officially supported by RetroAchievements developers as of April 2, 2025,[3] allowing it to be used in hardcore mode with leaderboard support while unofficial emulators are forced into softcore mode after this period.[note 1][note 2]
  • Firelight: A libretro-based multi-system emulation frontend for Microsoft Windows. Its melonDS DS core is supported.
  • SkyEmu: A multi-system emulator for Microsoft Window, macOS, Linux, Android, and iOS, and is also playable in a web browser. Its melonDS core is supported.

Setting up a guitar controller[]

There are several methods to be able to use a guitar controller for Guitar Hero: On Tour games and Band Hero in emulation software.

Recommended method
  • Follow the instructions for A Wise Moose's "How to Use a Guitar Controller on Nintendo DS Guitar Hero Games (2023 edition)". Note that the standalone version of DeSmuME does not have RetroAchievements support; use Bizhawk (melonDS core) or RetroArch (melonDS DS libretro core for screen rotation) if using the RetroAchievements service on personal computers (Bizhawk recommended).
  • Instead of mapping the fret buttons according to the video tutorial, map the fret buttons within the emulation software's controller input setting according to the coordinated Nintendo DS buttons listed below in the Control Hack section if using the Control Hack patch for Guitar Hero: On Tour.
  • In the GH DS strum script.ahk AutoHotKey script, edit the posX and posY values to where the mouse cursor will move back and forth (and you can use AutoHotKey's premade WindowSpy.ahk script to see your mouse's position values). You may also need v1.1.36.02 of AutoHotKey if the script isn't working in v2.x.x.
  • Once all controls and software are setup and you select a song, "strum" your guitar so that the mouse cursor is in your strumming zone (or move your mouse cursor to the strumming zone), then tap the key on your keyboard (default script key "[") that will always have the ┴ LC mouse's left click pressed down to allow your strums to register. After the song is completed or if you are pausing the song, press the key (default script key "]") that will release the held ┴ LC left click input.
  • For Guitar Duels, be prepared to quickly move your hand from strum bar to mouse to click on Battle Items or defend against Broken String, Signature, and Whammy Bar Battle Items. However, the mouse is still held down from the script so you should map the guitar's Select button and Orange fret in AntiMicroX to the script's ┴ LC mouse left click ("]" and "[" by default) to release and re-hold the ┴ LC mouse's left click input (be sure to move the mouse cursor back to strumming position before pressing the ┴ LC "hold left click" button). Additionally, map the Nintendo DS's microphone "button" to any any guitar controller inputs or keyboard keys in the emulation software's controller settings for Nintendo DS to defend against the Pyrotechnics Battle Item.

Deprecated method (not recommended)
  • With Xpadder or other keyboard-to-controller mapping software with similar features, the strum bar would need to be mapped to ┴ LC + Mouse Move (any direction, set to Spring Mode in Xpadder) with the game window's touchscreen positioned where the mouse cursor would be located and would instantly spring back to. Alt-strumming on long notes whammies long notes for extra Star Power. However, Xpadder's Spring Mode is not very reliable to accurately strum notes as the return of the spring may cause overstrumming.

Deprecated method (not recommended)
  • Another way would be to use the Guitar Hero Swipe Hotkeys fork of the melonDS libretro core for RetroArch or other libretro-based software, a fork of the melonDS libretrocore that can emulate a screen swipe as a hotkey (replacing microphone and close lids inputs) which can be assigned to the strum bar. This would be placed in the Core folder of RetroArch's directory. Updating melonDS with RetroArch's online updater would replace this fork with the main branch that doesn't include the experimental Guitar Hero: On Tour hacks.[4] However, this feature is experimental and strumming may not always register.
  • As of April 2025 with unofficially-supported and outdated emulators being unsupported for hardcore mode,[5] the Guitar Hero Swipe Hotkeys fork of the melonDS libretro core would be forced into softcore mode in RetroAchievements.

Control Hack[]

So far, as of February 22, 2021, only a Control Hack ROM Hack of the North American version (with English and French languages) is compatible in the RetroAchievements service,[6] which can be found on its forum page (GitHub account required to download). The patch can be applied to the game via Floating IPS (FLIPS) or Lunar IPS (LIPS) which bypasses and disables the Guitar Grip checks and allows the four interface buttons to be used as frets (Y = Green, X = Red, B = Yellow, A = Blue) but notes would still have to be strummed via touchscreen. If using a mouse to strum, hold the left mouse button (┴ LC) while moving it left and right or up and down.

RetroAchievements[]

Due to Guitar Hero: On Tour having different setlists depending on region, it is not possible for all regional versions of the game to share the same achievement list.

"English" achievements[]

List of achievements for the "English" version (NA, UK, AUS, JPN, NL) of Guitar Hero: On Tour in the RetroAchievements service, currently only compatible with the North American release with the Control Hack applied. These sets of achievements currently cannot be earned unpatched.

After an Expert Full Combos subset was released on May 25, 2024, a major revision to this main set was made on May 28, 2024 by pinguupinguu, which has 70 achievements worth 715 points, removing Expert Full Combos from this main set of achievements.[7]

Subset - Expert Full Combos[]

This subset of achievements, released on May 25, 2024 by pinguupinguu,[9] can be accessed by applying the Subset - Expert Full Combos xdelta patch to a North American copy of Guitar Hero: On Tour (unpatched). This achievement patch already includes the Control Hack in it that bypasses the Guitar Grip check and allows the player to use the interface buttons for frets. There are 51 achievements in the Expert Full Combos subset of achievements worth 955 points. In total for the revised main set and this subset, there are 121 achievements worth 1670 points.

As this subset includes Expert Full Combo achievements from the main set, the main set of achievements was soon revised to remove them on May 28, 2024.[7]
