The Guitar Hero SG Controller[1] is the first iteration of guitar controllers of the Guitar Hero series packaged with the PlayStation 2 version of Guitar Hero, Guitar Hero II, as well as the PlayStation 2 version of Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock exclusively from Target. It is much smaller than its Xbox 360 counterpart, the Guitar Hero X-Plorer Controller used in the Xbox 360 version of Guitar Hero II.
Also available for a limited amount of time was a Guitar Hero III ROE Bundle for PlayStation 2 from RedOctane's online store that included two Guitar Hero SG Controller controllers, one with a light wood theme and one with a dark wood theme on the body.[2]
Appearance
Being based on the Gibson SG guitar, the body is symmetrically curved on both sides, suitable for both left and right-handed users equally when laying it on a thigh while sitting down. The Guitar Hero SG Controller comes in a variety of body designs and colors.
- Guitar Hero: Black body, white pick guard, brown neck
- Guitar Hero II (PlayStation 2): Red body, black pick guard, black neck.
- Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock (Target-exclusive): White body, red pick guard, black neck.
- Guitar Hero III ROE Bundle (PlayStation 2): RedOctane online store-exclusive bundle that includes Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock, a key chain, Guitar Hero Dual Gig Bag, as well as two Guitar Hero SG Controllers with these finishes:[2]
- Light Wood: A rare light wood grain finish on the body.
- Dark Wood: A rare dark maple wood finish on the body.
Reception
The main criticism of the SG Controller was how loud it was. The clacking noise made by the strum bar was much louder than later guitar controllers. Also, the neck wasn't as strong as the X-Plorer Controller's neck.
Trivia
- The Guitar Hero SG Controller is one of the guitars available to use in-game for the PlayStation 2 versions of Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock and Guitar Hero: Aerosmith. The player character can play it as if it was a real guitar, despite the fact that it only has five buttons at the top.
