The Guitar Hero Wireless Les Paul Controller[1] was packaged with the Wii, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3 versions of Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock and Guitar Hero: Aerosmith (the Aerosmith bundles featuring a red Aerosmith-themed Les Paul guitar controller). It features a detachable neck and the rounded off buttons found in previous Guitar Hero controllers. The controller came with many stickers, including Guns N' Roses stickers.
While next generation users got the Les Paul guitar controller in their wireless bundle, the PlayStation 2 version of Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock and Guitar Hero III: Aerosmith wireless bundles had the Kramer guitar controller.
Appearance
Being shaped of a Les Paul guitar, the body is curved, allowing comfort on the legs when playing while sitting down. Faceplates can be removed/replaced with different faceplate designs.
- Guitar Hero III Xbox 360/PlayStation 3: Black body, neck and headstock. A wired version was available on Xbox 360 demo kiosks at retail stores.
- Guitar Hero III Wii: White body, black neck and headstock. The body also features a rectangular boxed slot to slip a Wii Remote into along with a Wii extension cable to connect to the bottom of the Wii Remote (Raphnet and RetroCultMods Wii-to-PC adapters can also utilize this Wii extension port).
- Guitar Hero: Aerosmith: Red body faceplate with a white design and an Aerosmith logo over the black body, black neck and headstock. A wired version was available on Xbox 360 demo kiosks at retail stores.
Faceplates
As the Wireless Les Paul Controller has interchangeable faceplates, many themed faceplates were produced for the Guitar Hero Wireless Les Paul Controller for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, as well as Wii to a lesser extent due to Wii Remote placement.
Faceplates available on all platforms. However, due to the design of Wii Les Paul guitar controllers having an open slot for placing the Wii Remote, the PlayStation 3/Xbox 360 faceplates cannot fit on the Wii version of the Guitar Hero Wireless Les Paul Controller with a Wii Remote but a Wii variation of the faceplates was available.
Limited Edition PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 faceplates available only through promotional offers.
Reception
While the Wireless Les Paul Controller received positive reception for its comfort, it has also been criticized for several reasons, one being that the detachable neck provides for a weak connection between the frets and the main guitar, occasionally resulting in dropped notes. The buttons tend to stick and become unresponsive after many hours of play. Also, the whammy bar of the guitar is just as breakable as the other guitars in the series. Finally, many players have claimed that they experienced problems with the guitar's tilt sensor. Some claim that Star Power engages randomly, while others say that, for them, star power almost never activates, no matter how hard they try. One person claims they had to push the neck behind them to activate it.
Trivia
- In Guitar Hero: Aerosmith (Xbox 360, PC, and PlayStation 3 versions), the Les Paul controller, along with the X-plorer controller, can be played like real guitars. These controllers do not appear as playable guitars in the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 version of Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock.
