The Nintendo DS is a handheld console released by Nintendo in 2004. Nintendo later released a revision of the hardware called Nintendo DS Lite in 2006 that was more compact.

Four Guitar Hero games, including three Guitar Hero: On Tour games and a Nintendo DS port of Band Hero, were released on Nintendo DS and they each bundled with a peripheral called Guitar Grip with 4 fret buttons that can be plugged into a Nintendo DS or Nintendo DS Lite's Game Boy Advance slot. Band Hero was also bundled with another peripheral called the Drum Grip for Drums that can only be used on a Nintendo DS Lite due to its size.

In 2008, Nintendo released a new Nintendo DS model called the Nintendo DSi and a larger version called Nintendo DSi XL in late 2009 and early 2010. Unfortunately, to reduce the cost of the device and make space for its hardware, the Nintendo DSi lacked a second cartridge slot, which made all Guitar Hero: On Tour games unplayable on all Nintendo DSi models as well as all Nintendo 3DS models, but Band Hero has limited playability on those models. They can be playable through Action Replay codes to bypass the Guitar Grip check and change controls but it's recommended to play on a Nintendo DS Lite.
