The Wii is the seventh generation home console released by Nintendo. The Wii is notable in that rather than using analog controllers for most games, such as its direct competitors, the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, the Wii uses a remote-shaped controller called the Wii Remote (shortened to "WiiMote") to play games.

Rather than making use of the Wii Remote's motion controls for playing Guitar Hero games on the Wii, instrumental peripherals were made for the platform alongside its rival platforms. Compared to instrumental controllers on other platforms, the instrumental controllers for Wii are powered by the Wii Remote. These instruments controllers for Wii will have an opened slot in its body to slide in the Wii Remote and a cable connects to the extension port of the Wii Remote.

Additionally, the Wii Remote itself (without a Wii guitar controller) can be used in Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock and Guitar Hero: Aerosmith where:

Strum-failing sound effects also output through the Wii Remote's speaker.

In the cheat menu when entering a cheat code, B, (upright), A, 1, and 2 corresponds with GRYBO as usual while (upright) is Strum Up and (upright) is Strum Down. Diagonally ➕▸ (upright) strums the red fret.

However, peripherals such as Wii Nunchuks, Wii Classic Controllers, and GameCube controllers are not supported in the Wii version of Guitar Hero games.
